A Herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens that are stored, cataloged and organised to facilitate their further study. The specimens and their associated collection data, are an irreplaceable source of information, that documents the identity of the plants, their habitats, their flowering and fruiting periods. They preserve and provide the comparative material that is essential for studies in taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, ecology, anatomy, morphology, conservation biology, biodiversity, ethnobotany, evolution, genetics etc. The plants are preserved over time and are available for study by future generations. In addition, a Herbarium contributes to the teaching of the above disciplines, as well as to raising the awareness of a wider public on biodiversity topics.
